Born in Zurich, Switzerland, Hans' family emigrated to New York in 1927, and he was sent to Tennessee to be raised by a rich uncle. He enlisted in the Army January 18, 1943 at Newark, New Jersey and requested assignment to the ski troops. Hans then served primarily with the 87th Mountain Infantry Regiment of the 10th Mountain Division where he was stationed at Camp Hale, Colorado, Camp Swift, Texas and Camp Carson, Colorado.
